Nine News’ Laurie Oakes triumphs at Quill Awards

Top prize at this year’s Quill Awards for journalism has gone to Nine News
political editor Laurie Oakes, who was recognised for his reporting of the 2010 federal elections.

Oakes was unanimously voted for by the judging panel.

He won the Graham Perkin Australian Journalist of the Year Award, beating Four Corners host Kerry O’Brien to the gong. Oakes’ triumph follows his Gold award at the Walkley Awards earlier this year.

Oakes, who is also a columnist for the Herald Sun and the Daily Telegraph, won the award thanks to a double election scoop: Julia Gillard’s reneging on a deal with Kevin Rudd about a leadership challenge, and her opposing pension rises and paid parental leave.

Best TV News reporting Quill Award went to Nine News’ Tim McMillan for his allegations of rape against members of the St Kilda Football Club.
