Nine orders Today Extra staff to self-isolate after guest Rita Wilson tests positive for coronavirus

Nine employees who were in “prolonged contact” with Rita Wilson during her appearance on Today Extra earlier this week have been tested and are self-isolating for 14 days, following today’s announcement that the actor and her husband, Tom Hanks, tested positive for coronavirus (COVID-19).

Today Extra hosts David Campbell and Belinda Russell are among those affected. Arrangements for alternative hosts are still being confirmed. Tracy Grimshaw has also pulled out from her A Current Affair hosting duties tonight since she had minor surgery last week, with Today Show host Karl Stefanovic taking her place.

Hanks and Wilson are in Australia, with Wilson appearing on the Nine show on Monday

“Nine today has taken action in line with our crisis response plan around a visit to our studio by Ms Rita Wilson on Monday this week, for an appearance on Today Extra with David Campbell and Belinda Russell,” a Nine spokesperson said.

“Our actions are in line with the guidelines set out by the Government and Health Authorities. Those who were in prolonged contact with Ms Wilson have been tested and are self-isolating for 14 days.

“Our premises is currently being thoroughly cleaned in all areas she visited and we are encouraging our employees to monitor their health and practise good hygiene.”

In an email to staff explaining the decision, Nine added that those self-isolating are to closely monitor their health. The affected areas of the Nine studios in Willoughby have been closed off for disinfecting.

“As this is a fast-moving situation, we will update all employees as more information comes to hand,” the email read.

“In the meantime, we strongly encourage all employees to continue following the Australian Government and health authority guidelines to avoid contracting or spreading the virus.”

Earlier today, Tom Hanks confirmed on social media that he and Wilson had tested positive to the virus, while Hanks was in pre-production for a Baz Luhrmann Elvis biopic on the Gold Coast.
