Nine partners with Discovery on new multi-channel 9Rush

Nine will launch a new multi-channel on Sunday, April 5, in partnership with Discovery.

The 9Rush channel is aimed at young male audiences and will provide competition for Seven’s 7Mate.

It will feature a range of Discovery content with an adventure and adrenaline focus, including Man vs. Wild with Bear Grylls, Street Outlaws, Naked and Afraid and Gold Rush: Parker’s Trail, as well as local Australian show Dirty Jobs Down Under.

A joint venture between the two companies, Nine will operate the channel and represent ad sales and Discovery will act as the primary content partner. 9Rush will be designated channel 96.

Discovery is also a content partner for multi-channel 9Life.

9Rush will commence at 7.00pm on Sunday, April 5 with the exclusive premiere of the new series of Top Gear UK.

Nine’s program director, Hamish Turner, said the content on 9Rush would be a free to air (FTA) first.

“Nine are thrilled to partner with Discovery to deliver premium, free to air first content. As a global leader in real-life entertainment, Discovery’s dedication to serving audiences with content which inspires, informs and entertains is second to none,” said Turner.

“The deal will deliver Nine and 9Now thousands of free to air premiere episodes. 9Rush audiences will be spoilt for choice, with an extensive range of high action and adventure programming, available on Australia’s latest channel and available free on 9Now.”

Rebecca Kent, general manager, Discovery Australia, New Zealand and Pacific Islands said the new channel will help Discovery’s content find new viewers.

“At Discovery we’re dedicated to powering the passions of our audiences with the best real-life entertainment. Action and adventure is a huge part of our DNA and we’re proud to be bringing some of our globally renowned and loved programming to 9Rush,” said Kent.

“We look forward to strengthening our partnership with Nine and connecting new viewers to some of Discovery’s powerhouse programs.”

Discovery’s content also airs on Foxtel, with the subscription TV provider signing a multi-year agreement with the content provider at the end of 2019. Discovery also has a partnership with Fetch.
