Nine pips Seven for ratings week despite big Friday night AFL audiences

Nine’s The Block kept Seven at bay to win the ratings week despite Seven’s big win with its Friday night AFL coverage, while The Bachelor helped Ten squeak into second place among the 16-39 audience demographic.

OzTAM weekly ratings figures show Nine’s main channel share was 21.7% to Seven’s 19.9% while Ten recorded 12.2%. Total network share though saw Seven record 30.2%, slightly ahead of Nine’s 29.4% with Ten attracting 17.4% of the week’s audiences.

The Block was again the main driver of Nine’s main channel ratings win with the show’s Sunday, Monday and Tuesday episode’s being the three most watched shows by metro and national audiences.

In the metro markets the three nights saw 1.34m, 1.094m and 1.059m viewer tune into Block. Ten however had some bright news with Wednesday’s The Bachelor making the top ten shows with Thursday’s episode attracting 882,000 viewers.

Seven’s main channel successes were the news and current affairs with Little Big Shots being the most successful entertainment show with 827,000 viewers – the 15th most watched show for the week.

Not showing the AFL on its main channel in the Sydney, Brisbane and Perth markets seems to have cost Seven as the Friday night and Saturday afternoon games’ viewer numbers were lower than they would have otherwise been.

Across the demographics, The Block and The Bachelor dominated the top five shows with Sunday’s The Block topping all categories, but The Bachelor’s Thursday and Wednesday night spots were the second and third most watched shows in the younger 18-39 age group.

The Bachelor’s performance in the 16-39 group saw Ten’s main channel take a 19.8% of the demographic for the week, beating out Seven’s 18.8% although both were still behind Nine’s 23.8%. In the 25-54 audience, Nine attracted 23.9% of the audience to Seven’s 18.2 and Ten’s 16.6%.
