Nine Radio promotes Anthony Smyth to new commercial director role

Nine Radio has kicked the year off by promoting Anthony Smyth to the newly-created, national role of commercial director of radio.

Smyth started with Macquarie Media, now Nine Radio after Nine’s acquisition of Macquarie, in 2012, holding roles including Victorian agency sales manager, Victorian sales director, and Melbourne’s head of sales.

In May last year, he became director of sales transformation, and in the new position will focus on “maximising the outcome for radio”, reporting to Nine’s director of sales across TV and radio, Richard Hunwick.

It’s a broad remit, Hunwick notes, and will see Smyth work with the executive team to develop a strategy, and with state directors of sales to implement that strategy.

“He will work with me on leading a newly formed internal team bringing together powered, commerce, trade marketing, research and digital to ensure we are providing the best offering in market to the sales teams,” Hunwick said in a note to staff announcing the promotion.

“In his role he will be a leader, an advisor, a collaborator, a business driver, a mentor, a sounding board and an ambassador for our radio offering. From a commercial perspective, this will not affect our sales structure in any way … but if you work in the radio vertical, Smyth[y] will ‘own’ the commercial space alongside me, and be responsible for the frameworks within which we can deliver the best outcome.

“It’s a role we need to ensure that outcome, and I can think of no one I would rather have fill it.”

Smyth will begin in the role on 17 January when he returns from leave.
