Nine woos The Bachelor after Ten dumping
Nine will be launching a brand new season from beloved The Bachelor franchise in 2025, after Ten announced it would not be airing the show in 2024 or 2025.
The Golden Bachelor was one of a number of shows presented at Nine’s Upfront on Thursday afternoon, which also saw the announcement of six new BBC free ad-supported TV channels, and a local version of Escape to the Château.
Under a new deal with BBC Studios, the 9Network will launch six exclusive FAST channels showcasing the best of the British broadcaster: BBC Comedy, BBC Food, BBC Home & Garden, BBC Earth, and two dedicated show channels: Top Gear, and Antiques Roadshow UK.
Nine has not only poached The Bachelor, but also the former host, Osher Günsberg, whose successful podcast, Better Than Yesterday, is joining Nine’s stable of podcast properties.
Hamish Turner, director of 9Now and programming, said the channels mark “another great step in our partnership with BBC Studios, as we work together to expand our live channel offering.”
Leading Nine’s original slate of new programming is The Golden Bachelor, which is launching locally after finding massive success in the US.
Former Sunrise host Samantha Armytage joins Nine to present the show, which proves “the best love stories often unfold later in life.”
The Floor is another format fresh from huge US success: the “ultimate trivia showdown” hosted by Underbelly’s Rodger Corser, which takes the unusual step of being a serialised shiny floor show.
“In this spectacular battle of brains, 81 Aussies will face off on a colossal, futuristic floor, all competing for a life-changing grand prize of $200,000,” the show’s promo explains.
“The game is simple: each player begins with one tile on the floor, representing their subject of expertise. Their aim is to challenge and win their neighbours’ tiles and steal their area of The Floor. Whoever wins the entire floor will rule all and claim the grand prize.”
New Zealand drama Madam, starring Rachel Griffiths and Danielle Cormack will also launch on Nine next year.
The premise: “American Mackenzie Leigh (Griffiths) lives in small-town New Zealand with her husband, Rob (Martin Henderson), and their two sons. However, when Mack discovers Rob has been seeing a sex worker, she’s not angry but surprisingly inspired.
“With no money and no experience, Mack forges Rob’s signature on a home loan, leases a motel, and recruits an eclectic mix of mostly rookie sex workers for her own ‘feminist, ethical brothel’.”
Finally, there’s Chateau DIY Australia, a five-part series which follows intrepid Australians looking for a new life in France, as they renovate abandoned châteaux, restoring them to their former magnificence.
Of course, Nine’s tentpole shows will all be returning, too, with new seasons of Lego Masters, MAFS, Tipping Point, The Block (set to hit a country town for the first time in the show’s history), The Hundred with Andy Lee, and Travel Guides to hit the screen in 2025.
