Nine’s Betfair promotion under pressure from the ICC
Channel Nine is coming under pressure from the International Cricket Council to drop its heavy on air promotion of Betfair advertising during cricket coverage. The betting firm has been enjoying a partnership that includes commentator mentions, as well as on screen messages and advertising. But it has been criticised by anti-gambling campaigners.
According to a report from ABC News, the ICC believes the promotion is putting the integrity of the sport at risk. However, nobody from the ICC is directly cited in the report.
Nobody from the Dubai-based ICC was available for comment today, as Friday is part of the UAE weekend.
It’s really interesting to see the Nine sports coverage and the adoption of the “cash for comment” style approach – which has been evolving slowly. From BaggyGreen.com plugs, now to this.
One things for sure BetFair are getting some exposure out of it all.

I usually listen to Cricket on ABC Sydney local radio and only listen to a bit of actual TV commentary – the betfair “cash for comments” seemed to be coming thick and fast the few times I did listen to the tv this summer during the test series

I’ve watched a lot of cricket this summer and couldn’t believe the saturation of Betfair plugs. Commentators promoting gambling seemed to be pushing the boundaries of ethics to the extreme.
I guess Tony Greig must have shares in Betfair.
