Nine’s director of sales steps down earlier than planned

Nine’s director of sales for total TV, Richard Hunwick, has left Nine earlier than planned.

The network initially announced he would step down from the media company in September, but Hunwick has since brought this date forward.

Taking to Linkedin on Wednesday to announce the news, Hunwick wrote: “After the best part of 14 years the journey with Nine comes to an end.

“It has been an amazing ride since the first day – from a single broadcast TV signal through a digital transformation that sees a multi channel strategy delivered on all devices live and on demand – with a little bit of audio in the middle to keep me on my toes.

“Leaving at an exciting time for the Network as the Paris Olympics launches another eight-year journey (that will finish where I started, in Brisbane) – onwards and upwards for all of the amazing people at Nine, but the right time for me to look for the next opportunity.”

Hunwick said he is “looking forward to short break, and then what’s next – not excited to leave, but I am excited as I look to what the future will hold”.

Joining in late 2010 as director of sales in Brisbane, Hunwick worked his way up over a decade to become national director of sales for television and radio, before his last promotion in 2022 that saw him oversee all total television sales.

Michael Stephenson, Nine’s chief sales officer, described Hunwick as “one of [his] best friends” after he first announced his departure in May.

“Over the past 25 years I’ve had the pleasure of working with one of my best friends. Not many people get to do that. Rich has a passion that is infectious, he is an incredible leader of people and he cares more than anyone I know.

“There has never been a more exciting time to be in television. The pace of change is accelerating and I have no doubt that Rich will continue to have a significant impact on our industry in his next challenge.”

As previously announced, Nikki Rooke, current director of sales in Sydney, will step into Hunwick’s role as director of sales – total television.
