No Aussies in the Australian Open sees viewers switch to the Big Bash on Thursday night

Ten’s Big Bash cricket beat the Australian Open in Thursday night’s preliminary OzTam ratings with Seven’s coverage suffering from a lack of local singles stars in the tournament’s semi-finals.

Seven’s coverage of the late match between Croatia’s Marin Cilic and England’s Kyle Edmonds attracted 622,000 viewers across the five city metro areas which saw it beaten by the 739,000 who tuned in to see the Perth Scorchers take Big Bash’s top sport in their win over the Adelaide Strikers on Ten.

The key 25-54 audience demographic saw both sessions of the Big Bash win the evening with 328,000 metro viewers for the evening session and 253,000 for the earlier session. Nine News came in third for the segment with an audience of 227,000 which beat the 214,000 who tuned in for the tennis.

In all metro viewers, Nine and Seven news won the night with 800,000 and 820,000 viewers respectively while the ABC’s best performing program was the 7pm news with an audience of 568,000.

Nine’s Hot Seat was the only non-sport or news show to crack the all-audience metro top ten with 491,000 viewers.
