Now You See Me tops Aussie box office on opening weekend

The Hopscotch/eOne distributed Now You See Me has topped the Australian box office on its opening weekend, taking home $3,981,757 across 265 screens.

The opening trumped Michael Bay’s Pain and Gain, starring Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, which also premiered across the weekend on 201 screens but brought home just $1,758,006 for distributor Paramount.

 

Now You See Me stars Australian actress Isla Fisher, Jesse Eisenberg, Mark Ruffalo and Woody Harrelson. The film follows a team of  illusionists who pull off bank heists.

Both films push box office stayers The Wolverine, The Conjuring and The Heat down the list however they remain in the top five. This was The Wolverine’s third weekend at the Australian box office and the film has made a total of $13,489,126 while The Conjuring’s total is $7,257,013 and The Heat $14,030,793. The Great Gatsby remains in the top 20 after 11 weekends at the box office. It has now made a total of $27,439,765, inching ever closer to the $30m mark.

Sophia Coppola’s The Bling Ring also opened this weekend on just 10 screens and made $54,230.
