NRL Grand Final draws in largest audience on 9Now; overall views drop after COVID lockdowns spike

The 2022 NRL Grand Final which saw Penrith beat Parramatta on Nine delivered 2.756 million viewers nationally, 1.671 million in metro viewers, and 389,000 viewers on 9Now, the biggest number to watch an NRL Grand Final via streaming.

The game which aired Sunday night topped overall TV viewing on Sunday, winning all three key advertising demos, with the presentation and the entertainment during the Grand Final coverage bringing in 1.348 million and 948,000 metro viewers respectively.

The coverage gave Nine an easy network share win, with 46.1% for Sunday. However, the numbers were well below the interest garnered for Seven’s AFL Grand Final the weekend prior, which saw 2.179 million metro viewers tune in to watch the Geelong Cats beat the Sydney Swans, making it the most watched program of the year to date. The game brought in 5.76 viewers nationally for Seven.

Last year, the NRL Grand Final between the South Sydney Rabbitohs and the Penrith Panthers, brought in 3.596 viewers nationally, 2.202 million metro views,1.0312 million regional viewers, and 363,000 people watching via streaming.

Looking at the ratings week just passed, Nine beat Seven in the week ending 1 October with a network share of 29.7% over Nine’s 27.9%, while ABC finished the week at 17.5%, followed by Ten on 16%. 

Nine also won the primary channel share for the week, with a 22.2% share ahead of Seven’s 18.8%, and the top multi-channel for the week was 7TWO with 3.6%.

In the latest Daily Consolidated Total TV Report for 26 September, Monday’s Seven News at 7:30 was the #1 program nationally across linear, with 1.517 million viewers, including 30,000 on BVOD and an uplift of 3%. 9-1-1 Lonestar on Seven had the biggest uplift of 42% and was viewed by a total audience of 393,000.

Taking a look at Monday’s TV viewing, the Block topped entertainment, with 884,000 metro viewers while also winning all three key advertising demos.

Next in entertainment, Have You Been Paying Attention? On Ten pulled in 540,000 metro viewers, followed by an episode of Farmer wants a Wife with a metro audience of 523,000.

Australian Story on ABC was next with 521,000 metro viewers, while an episode of Home and Away aired to 469,000 metro viewers.

In news programming, Seven News was #1 with 917,000 metro viewers, followed by Seven News at 6:30 with a metro audience of 928,000. Nine News at 6:30 brought in 767,000 metro viewers, followed by Nine News with 719,000 metro viewers. 

Nine won the night, taking an overall network share of 30.5% over Seven’s 27%, while ABC and Ten both had a share of 17.9.

Nine also won the primary channel share, and the top-rating multi-channel on Monday was 7TWO on 3.1%.
