$1m for Broken Hill studio

The NSW Government will invest $1m to help refurbish a former power station in Broken Hill to turn it into a film studio and multi-purpose facility.

The studio will support production of Mad Max 4: Fury Road when it starts filming in August.

The announcement was made on May 12, but it was only reported by regional media outlets.

According to a statement to the press, “the new studio will strengthen Broken Hill’s blossoming film and creative arts industry and generate jobs for the region […] it is expected to inject up to $40 million into the NSW economy and create up to 123 jobs over five years.”

Broken Hill has hosted films such as Mad Max 2, Mission Impossible II, Dirty Deeds and The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.

The plans include a Mad Max museum at the venue, when the studio is not being utilised for filming.

Funds will be provided through the Industry & Investment’s Local Infrastructure Support Program (LISF).
