Omnilab launches animation studio in NZ

Omnilab Media has expanded its New Zealand VFX company Oktobor by launching an animation studio “inspired by the success of WETA”, which will initially service Nickelodeon Studios.

With 30 staff members, Oktobor Animation is a joint venture with US company Backyard Animated Pictures; it’s already secured a long-term contract to produce CG animated TV series, including The Penguins of Madagascar – based on the hit Madagascar DreamWorks movies.

“By mid-next year we expect to have a crew of over 120 artists and technicians. In fact, we anticipate Oktobor Animation will provide up to 300 jobs over the first four years,” said Oktobor GM Bruce Everett. “We have received invaluable assistance from the Ministry of Economic Development, as well as input from New Zealand Film Commission and Film New Zealand in order to make this business opportunity viable.”

The company will offer up to 15 three-month paid internships for regional CG artists, and between 120-140 contract jobs at their Auckland operation.

Omnilab MD Christopher Mapp said Oktobor Animation is “inspired by the success of WETA”, and that the country’s film succees can be extended to the television VFX and animation arena by establishing Auckland as a production hub for CG animation.
