Optus announces 2019 programming slate for Premier League
Optus has launched its fourth year of broadcasting for the Premier League, after signing a three-season contract for 2019-2022, making the Optus Sport platform the exclusive home of every live match for the first time.
The action, which will kick off August 10, will all be available live on Optus Sport, and on-demand, with 380 games available to watch, including the mini-matches.
“Having the Australian rights to show every single match of the Premier League exclusively live is an enormous opportunity for Optus Sport,” Optus’ head of TV and content, Corin Dimopoulos, said.
“Our suite of exclusively live premium sport content, which also includes the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League, notably increases with the renewal of the Premier League this season.
“We are extending our production of mini-matches and highlights, giving our customers the ability to watch Premier League action when they want and how they want so they don’t miss a minute of their team’s action.”
The Optus Sport coverage will also be the first time globally that the Premier League will be streamed on a 5G network. It comes as Optus is beginning to roll out its 5G mobile network, which will begin to be accelerated over the coming months.
Premier League director of broadcasting, Paul Molnar, said: “It is great to see innovation like this by our global broadcasters and we look forward to seeing Optus Sport continue to innovate with its distribution and coverage going forward.”
In announcing the Premier League coverage, Optus Sport has also revealed its subscriber count for the first time, reporting more than 700,000 users.
For Optus prepaid mobile customers, the telecommunications company will be rolling out a $10 Optus Sports Add On, providing them with access to the platform for up to 28 days.
Through that, consumers will have access to all the on-field action, but also a completely revamped programming lineup, including Scores on Sunday, Matchday Live Extra, The Weekend Review, The Headline Makers, The Watching World, The Big Interview, The Analysis Show and Inside the Premier League.
Optus Sport is available as an optional extra on eligible Optus plans for no extra cost, or non-Optus customers and Optus customers ineligible for a monthly subscription may subscribe to Optus Sport for $14.99 per month.

So no Premier League on SBS?
What does that mean for the 2022 World Cup deal?

@BriznEyland – poor form and a negative attitude.
It’s well documented Optus Sport had their challenges during last year’s World Cup, however, since then the app and the streaming for me as a avid fan has been flawless.
The production of the mini matches as well as the overnight goals has also been a nice touch. When I have had family and friends visit from the UK they’ve also shared my sentiment that this is a world class showing of the best competition in the world.
Give it a try for the 19/20 season, you will not be disappointed.

Happy with the commentary and mini-matches however it is still 720p… it’s like you have to pad out your main meal with great sides to cover the fact the main isn’t that great. Not sure what advertising the 5G streaming is for unless they broadcast 4K 60fps HDR (which 4G could already handle)….

When are we going to see games streamed in 4k?
