Optus to offer free live streaming of World Cup on mobile

Optus will for the first time offer mobile customers free live streaming of all FIFA World Cup matches.

The only other time the telco has live streamed a sporting event on the mobile was the tennis Australian Open held in Melbourne earlier this year.

Optus is a sponsor of the Football Federation Australia and is the mobile broadcaster of the World Cup.

The free feed of the 64 live matches will be tailored for mobile viewing with dedicated at ground cameras.

Its customers will also have access to other World Cup content including archived clips, news and SMS goal alerts.

Text based content will be charged at standard browsing rates and all video content including the 500 FIFA archive clips is part of the $6.99 per month premium package.

Mark Mulder, Optus general manager, contents and portals said: “If the prospect of dragging yourself out of bed at 4am for the Socceroos is too much to bear, Optus customers can now pick up their phone and stream every game live from the comfort or their bed or wherever takes their fancy.”
