Our Watch launches Media Making Change, website for journalists reporting on violence against women
Our Watch, the national body to prevent violence against women, has launched Media Making Change, a website for journalists featuring a range of resources to encourage responsible reporting on gendered violence.
These resources will include the new national guidelines for reporters, key research findings on the drivers of violence against women, useful contacts to source for an interview, advice on interviewing survivors of violence, and lecture and tutorial content for university journalism courses.
“Good reporting can make a powerful difference. Responsible, sensitive reporting can be the difference between a woman staying silent, or having the courage to disclose the abuse she’s suffering, and the difference between the public accepting gendered violence as ‘just the way things are’ or understanding that it’s preventable, and we all have a role to play in ending it,” said Our Watch CEO Patty Kinnersly.
“The media can address widespread condoning of violence against women by reporting accurately, safely and respectfully. The media can also address gender inequality, gender stereotypes and disrespect towards women through their content and in their workplaces.”
Kinnersly encouraged reporters, presenters, editors and journalism educators to access and make use of the site.
“We know that overwhelmingly, the media wants to do a good job on reporting on violence against women. Many journalists have asked us for support to achieve this and we believe this website will be an important resource.”
This is a great idea. The persistence of gendered bias in reporting is appalling – and underplays the genuine and real threat to women. Nice to see a practical solution and set of tools to help overcome this

Hi .
i am based in the UK and was Police staff for the MPS for almost 27 years. I spent 13 of those years assisting Police officers in supporting victims of Domestic abuse. In 2016 together with my sister ( a published writer) we produced a fantastic play on the insidious nature of Coercive control. Waking up Dead tells the story of a young wife who gradually succumbs to the effects of this heinous crime, culminating in her death at the hands of her violent controlling husband. The content of our work was ratified by Senior MPS staff and is very valid given the Sally Challen case here in the UK .
We have since formed a small theatre/film company and film our work with a view to licensing it to interested parties. Please get in touch if you feel our work would be of interest . Kind Regards . Jane Upson
