Our Watch launches Media Making Change, website for journalists reporting on violence against women

Our Watch, the national body to prevent violence against women, has launched Media Making Change, a website for journalists featuring a range of resources to encourage responsible reporting on gendered violence.

These resources will include the new national guidelines for reporters, key research findings on the drivers of violence against women, useful contacts to source for an interview, advice on interviewing survivors of violence, and lecture and tutorial content for university journalism courses.

The guidelines are designed to support Victorian reporters

“Good reporting can make a powerful difference. Responsible, sensitive reporting can be the difference between a woman staying silent, or having the courage to disclose the abuse she’s suffering, and the difference between the public accepting gendered violence as ‘just the way things are’ or understanding that it’s preventable, and we all have a role to play in ending it,” said Our Watch CEO Patty Kinnersly.

“The media can address widespread condoning of violence against women by reporting accurately, safely and respectfully. The media can also address gender inequality, gender stereotypes and disrespect towards women through their content and in their workplaces.”

Kinnersly encouraged reporters, presenters, editors and journalism educators to access and make use of the site.

“We know that overwhelmingly, the media wants to do a good job on reporting on violence against women. Many journalists have asked us for support to achieve this and we believe this website will be an important resource.”
