Over 5 million tuned into last night’s State Of Origin

The fiery first match in this year’s State of Origin attracted over 5.3 million viewers on Wednesday night, with an average national audience of 3.44 million tuning into the action.

The top three spots in the Wednesday ratings were taken by Nine’s coverage of the NSW v QLD battle, with the pre-match drawing an average audience of 1.87 million, and a total reach of 4.1 million, while an average audience of over 1.1 million stuck around for the post-match analysis.

With a BVOD audience of 760,000 on 9Now, the game was the highest rating program of all time on 9Now.

Elsewhere on free-to-air TV, The Chase and Tipping Point Australia are battling it out for the 5pm slot, with the former just nudging ahead with a reach of 1.489 million, and an average audience of 729,000, compared to Tipping Point’s 1.434 million reach and 726,000 average.

The Origin nudged Masterchef Australia out of the top ten, with the cooking competition drawing 1.14 million, and an average of 531,000.
