Paul Hogan brings back ‘shrimp on the barbie’ for Cure Cancer Australia

Paul Hogan, the man who encouraged Americans to ‘throw another shrimp on the barbie’ in the 1980s, has returned to TV to call on Australians to donate money for cancer research.

As a Cure Cancer Australia campaign ambassador, ‘Hoges’ calls on Australians to “slip an extra shrimp… errr… prawn on the barbie” to raise money for cancer research.

Created by freelance director and producer, Karen Warner, the video is part of a wider campaign to support the foundation’s ‘Barbecure’ initiative, encouraging Australians to host fundraising barbecues this summer.

Floyd Larsen, CEO at Cure Cancer Australia, said every Australian could participate in the ‘Barbecure’ intiative at least once over summer, calling it “an easy opportunity to raise vital funds to help cure cancer.”

Larsen also said Hogan’s support would allow the foundation to “reach new audiences.”

Warner said the campaign reinforced the iconic images of Hogan in the 1984 Tourism Australia ad.

“Paul Hogan is as fun to work with as you would imagine, and shooting with the Sydney Harbour Bridge in the background reinforces the iconic image of Hoges throwing a shrimp on the Barbie from the famous 1980s Tourism Australia campaign, but this time for a worthwhile cause to raise funds for cancer research,” she said.

The campaign is supported by Behaviour Change Partners and media partners, including Adshel, Cabcharge, Channel 7, Facebook, Frontier Advertising, Google and MCN.

Paul Fishlock, founding partner at Behaviour Change Partners said working with Hogan was a “privilege” for the agency.

Larsen hopes the new initiative will help “early-career researchers” who are struggling to find funding.

The campaign will run across TV, outdoor, taxi backs, radio print and online until February 2017.
