Neil Mitchell to leave 3AW Mornings after ’34 years of 4am starts’

Melbourne radio veteran and 3AW’s morning host, Neil Mitchell, will step down from the program after 34 years.

Announced on air this morning, Mitchell said he will officially depart the show in December. However, he will stay on with 3AW and Nine in a new role, including hosting his podcast, Neil Mitchell Asks Why.

“Apart from my family, radio has been my life and my love. I will miss enormously the energy, excitement, and occasional whack that the audience dishes out to me daily,” he said in a message to listeners.

“But it is time, after 34 years of 4am starts, peddling flat out is getting a little hard. I will still appear on 3AW as an analyst, will do a weekly podcast, and hope to continue writing and TV work as well.”

3AW station manager, Stephen Beers, said: “Neil has been an enormous part of 3AW for decades, he reinvented talkback radio in Melbourne and the power of the audience in shaping our lives. No one story or campaign can sum him up, we can only thank Neil for his ongoing desire to deliver the best radio every day.

“I am excited for our next chapter with Neil across many of the Nine platforms. Neil has shaped the entire radio station, he is and always will be 3AW.”

As of now, Mitchell is the only person to be inducted into both the Melbourne Press Club Hall of Fame and the Australian Commercial Radio Hall of Fame.

His replacement is expected to be announced in the coming days. The announcement came amid another Melbourne morning radio shakeup that saw Virginia Trioli depart the ABC morning program.
