PHD boosts global leadership team with appointment of CMO and CCO
Omnicom Media Group’s PHD has boosted its global leadership team with the promotion of Avril Canavan to worldwide chief marketing and communications officer, and Patrick Ryan to worldwide chief commercial officer.
Both are newly created roles, and will see Canavan and Ryan continue to report to global CEO, Philippa Brown, and work with teams across 100 offices.

Canavan and Ryan have both been promoted to C-suite roles
Canavan joined PHD Worldwide in 2010 as global PR director, before stepping up to worldwide marketing and communications director in 2013. Before PHD, Canavan was global PR director at Iris and ran the PR function at TBWA London.
In addition, Jess Ozdemir and Lisa Williams have joined the marketing team as worldwide director and EMEA director respectively, reporting to Canavan.
“PHD has a strong and defining heritage as a strategic and creative media agency,” Canavan said.
“I consider myself privileged to work with great talent across the network to showcase the creativity, innovation and thought leadership that makes PHD stand out from other network brands. I’m looking forward to the next part of the journey.”
Ryan joined the agency from UM in 2013 as worldwide business development director, leading global and regional pitches. Emma Storer has been promoted to that role, and will report to Ryan.
“The last six years have seen phenomenal growth across the network powered by an amazing group of talent and world-class technology. PHD is in rapid ascendancy and I can’t wait to be part of our future success,” said Ryan.
The appointments follow a number of global new business wins including LG Electronics, Tik Tok and Pokerstars, accounts which were added to a client roster including Volkswagen Group, HSBC, and Singapore Airlines.
CEO Brown said the network was continuing to evolve.
“Avril and Patrick have been an instrumental part of PHD’s network growth story and I couldn’t be happier that they are taking on new senior roles, as we continue PHD’s ambitious growth plans and make a leap in our evolution as a network,” Brown, said.
“They’re a great team that has driven our approach to agency marketing and business development, which has manifested itself in everything from our success in recent pitches to our position as one of the most awarded networks globally.”
Hi Britt,
It’s actually AVRIL Canavan, not to be confused with APRIL Canavan, the author of seminal fantasy novel “Using Her Dragons: A Reverse Harem Paranormal Romance.”
Cheers,
Jack.

Hi Jack,
Thank you for pointing that out! All fixed (although with a novel with a name like that, April Canavan would be an intriguing appointment indeed).
