Pitch Perfect opens solidly for Universal
Pitch Perfect has opened with a solid $8,957 screen average over the weekend at the Australian box office.
The American musical comedy made $2.598m in its opening weekend across 290 screens, according to the Motion Picture Distributors Association of Australia.
The film stars Australian comedian Rebel Wilson and is directed by Jason Moore.
With a substantial pre-release screening of 212 screens last weekend, the film now stands at $3.567m for distributor Universal.
The earnings weren’t enough however to top Skyfall’s continuing run. Now in its third weekend, the James Bond film remains on the top of the box office table and made $4.656m, taking its total Australian box office to $32.229m.
The debut feature film from rapper RZA, The Man with the Iron Fists starring Russell Crowe and Lucy Lui made $157,000 on 45 screens for a $3,497 screen average.
Meanwhile, Clint Eastwood’s latest film The Trouble with the Curve made $132,000 across 85 screens for a $1,556 screen average.
Australian film-maker Ben Lewin’s latest, The Sessions added another $54,900 to its total, taking the film to $1.085m for distributor Fox.
Can Australian distributors please start releasing films in a timely manner? Pitch Perfect is about to be released on DVD in America next week. Just as bad it Paranorman, not getting released until January here in Australia, was out in August in America. I can legally purchase that film’s DVD now from overseas. Truly pathetic…

Ben, yes, you can purchase the DVD from overseas if you want. However, it is not legal. Amazon selling DVDs into overseas territories is a violation of the territorial rights of the local distributor who has acquired the exclusive distribution rights. The studios don’t really mind and would never sue Amazon because they don’t care if where they get the ir sales as they hold worldwide rights. It is the independent distributors who get screwed. The studios won’t dare sue Amazon but hey have sued local DVD stores for selling overseas copies.

Hilarious film – saw it the other night! Looking forward to seeing Rebel Wilson in a leading role sometime soon

Since I worked with Rebel on Fat Pizza she has climbed the slow ladder to where she is now. Naturally gifted and a hard worker she puts in a standout performance in a really strong film. Like an a Capella “Best in Show”, Pitch Perfect has all the right moves to make it stick around for ages.

Ugh, another movie where Rebel Wilson tries way too hard to be funny. Kudos to her for her success because she really has done well, but I just cannot understand the appeal.
