Podcast One Australia reports 158% jump in listening since March

Since March 2020, Podcast One Australia’s listener numbers have gone up 158%.

More Australians are embracing the concept of screenless entertainment with September being PodcastOne Australia’s biggest listening month this year.

Since March, PodcastOne Australia listening has jumped 158%*, while September was also SCA radio podcasts’ biggest listening month.

Comedy, sport, business, news, society and culture and health have driven listener growth in PodcastOne Australia podcasts and the Top 10 performing titles in September were:

  1. Hamish and Andy
  2. The Howie Games
  3. The Briefing
  4. Matt & Alex
  5. Emsolation
  6. Motley Fool Money
  7. Just the Gist
  8. The Mentor with Mark Bouris
  9. The Small Business Big Marketing Podcast with Timbo Reid
  10. A Life of Greatness.

SCA Head of Podcasting ‑ PodcastOne Australia, Grant Tothill, said: “ Podcasts have become the fastest growing entertainment media in Australia. With so much choice from information and education based podcasts to entertainment, sport, true crime, pop culture and comedy, health and wellbeing, arts and lifestyle, Australians are now using podcasts as part of their daily habit and turning more and more to trusted Australian voices.

“We are continuing to co-create premium podcast series with well-known Australians across a number of key genres and in a variety of styles, from short form timely podcasts through to timeless audio features, to match the increasing demand from both listeners and brands alike.”

An altered COVID summer is set to see additional growth in podcast consumption, with 50% of SCA’s audience saying they have more time to listen to podcasts over summer, and 77% saying podcasts keep them entertained**.

PodcastOne Australia has launched five new podcasts since September, including Zero Waste Baby with Veronica Milson, Hamish and Andy’s The Remembering Project, Breaking Poverty with Adam Shand, The Boat Shed from Hook Line and Sinker and the NSW Police State Crime Command’s official podcast.

SCA podcasts represent 25% of the All-Australian Top 100 Ranker^. Hamish and Andy took second spot in the All-Australian Podcast Ranker, with The Howie Games ranked no. 9.

SCA radio podcasts also performed exceptionally well during September, including Triple M Footy (AFL), Triple M’s Rush Hour (Melbourne), Triple M’s The Hot Breakfast, Triple M Rocks Footy (NRL), Triple M’s Kennedy Molloy, Triple M Sydney’s Moonman in the Morning and Hit’s Hughsey and Ed.
