Q&A with Sunita Gloster

Sunita GlosterIn a piece that first appeared in Encore, Sunita Gloster, CEO, Australian Association of National Advertisers talks about Twitter voyeurism and why good shoes are important to getting ahead.

Who is the most powerful person in Australian media and why?

I don’t think there is anyone that has more power at their disposal right now than Kevin Rudd. He would probably agree.

It’s not just about the control he had in keeping us guessing around the election date. But even in an election that started off as Abbot’s to lose, I still think the country has all eyes on Kevin.

What one medium could you not live without?

My iPhone.

Your one guilty media pleasure?

Twitter voyeurism. Sadly, I’m not that discerning either. I like the salacious, the gossipy, the sledging stuff too. I like listening in on conversations between tweeps from the sofa. Yep, I follow @warne888.

The next big industry trend is…

I’m hearing people talk about digital detoxing and challenging phrases about not being owned by your devices. It would be like going cold turkey for me.

If you weren’t doing this for a living what would you be doing?

I’d be a luxury hotel tester.

Your best piece of career advice…

Nobody does it alone. Don’t be afraid to ask for help.

And hurdles are best attempted in high heels. Expensive ones. Always invest in great shoes.

If you could poach any one person who would it be?

David Droga. Everything he touches seems to turn to gold.

Would you recommend working in this industry to your kids?

Absolutely. Although, my first child isn’t going to finish high school until the year 2022, which is a scary thought in itself, let alone imagining what this industry will look like then.

What is your favourite Aussie ad?

The Slip. Slop. Slap. TVC from the early ’80s. I probably didn’t love it then, but I find myself recalling it, singing it and preaching it to the kids all the time now. That’s a slow release Gold Effie. More recently the Share a Coke campaign. What’s not to like?
