I Quit Sugar media entrepreneur Sarah Wilson revealed as closing Publish keynote
The final line-up for next month’s Publish conference by Mumbrella has been revealed, with Sarah Wilson – creator of the I Quit Sugar publishing phenomenon – announced as the closing keynote speaker.
Other newly-announced speakers for Publish include Zac Skulander, former winner of the Hegarty Award for young publishing executive of the year, who will share insights into some of News Corp’s most high-impact print campaigns.
Also new to the line-up is Karen Lawson, CEO of start-up incubator, Slingshot Accelerator, who will join a panel to offer predictions on the future directions of media. Lawson is ex-CEO of jobs site CareerOne and a former Yahoo7 executive.
Alex Clark, founder of Press Patron, has joined a panel examining subscription and funding strategies for content.
As has been announced previously, Publish – to be held on September 15 at Sydney’s Royal Randwick – will kick off with an opening keynote from Slate Magazine president Keith Hernandez, who will share the story of the 20-year history of the world’s first mainstream online magazine. The event also sees Nicholas Gray share The Australian newspaper’s journey to becoming a multi-platform product.
The event will also feature a series of case studies on key publishing strategies, including:
- How Fairfax and Mumbrella developed event divisions
- Sales strategies to get mastheads in front of busy media agencies
- How to reach readers by email
- How to deal with the rise of Facebook Instant Articles and Apple News
- Subscription strategies to get readers to pay for content
- How to commercialise podcasts
- Strategies to build a native offering
- How to shift from print to digital culture
- How to monetise audiences the Google way
The full program, and details of how to buy tickets, are available on the Publish website.
I have never understood why Sarah Wilson gets all the “quit sugar” kudos when her book came well after David Gillespie’s original work Sweet Poison (1 September 2008) and the Quit Sugar Plan (June 2010) – Wilson’s book was not published until 2014.

In a word: MARKETING
You can’t just build it and expect them to come, you need to do a huge amount of PR, advertising, promotions and integrated editorial, social media, 3rd party endorsement and more and THEN they will come.
