SmoothFM has leapfrogged KiisFM to be the most popular FM radio station in Sydney

Sydney: SmoothFM overtakes KiisFM as Sydney’s most popular FM station

SmoothFM has leapfrogged KiisFM to be the most popular FM radio station in Sydney after climbing a massive 1.4 points to an audience share of 9.1%, in the latest GfK radio survey.

In a bumper survey for Nova Entertainment Smooth’s sister station Nova 96.9 also enjoyed a large audience jump, up one point to 8.1% and joint second with Kiis in the FM market in the city.

The prolonged election campaign appears to have made listeners tune out from the major talkback stations in the city with 2GB dropping 0.2 points to 11.6%, but maintaining its top spot, and ABC702 slipping 0.6 points to 9.3%, just ahead of Smooth.

Macquarie Radio’s 2UE managed to buck the trend with a 0.3 point gain to a 4% share, thanks largely to a 0.4% jump for its breakfast show.

WSFM was the biggest loser, dropping further back after losing 0.7 points overall to an audience share of just 6.2%, only ahead of 2DayFM which saw recent audience jumps cancelled out with a 0.3 point slip to 4.1%.

That came despite Sam Frost and Rove McManus’ breakfast show on the Southern Cross Austereo station growing marginally again to a 3.9% share, up 0.6 points on the last survey.

Sister station KiisFM’s Kyle Sandilands and Jackie ‘O’ Henderson enjoyed a 0.5 point jump to 10.4% to maintain top spot of the FM breakfast market, while Alan Jones continues to dominate in the city with a share of 14.1%, down marginally on last survey.

Nova’s Ryan Fitzgerald and Michael ‘Wippa’ Wipfli stayed in second with a rise of 0.3 points to 7.7%, while Smooth’s Bogart Torelli and Glenn Daniel jumped 1 point into third spot with a 7.4% share.

Dave Hughes and Kate Langebroek maintained overall top spot by a whisker for KiisFM with a 10.2% share (up 0.1 points), just ahead of Nova’s Kate Ritchie, Tim Blackwell and Marty Sheargold who enjoyed a huge 1.4 point jump to a 10.1% share.

SmoothFM jumped into third with a similarly huge 1.3 point leap to 8.4% for Byron Webb.

The furore over Triple M breakfast host Eddie McGuire’s remarks about drowning The Age sports journalist Caroline Wilson have not dampened the breakfast show’s ratings result, with Triple M’s ‘Hot Breakfast’ holding on to its breakfast FM crown.

The show, which also features Mick Molloy and Luke Darcy, posted a share of 9.5% consistent with its result in survey three.

Late last month McGuire was embroiled in controversy for making comments on radio about drowning Wilson at the Big Freeze, an event where celebrities plunge into ice to raise money for motor neurone disease. McGuire later apologised on air for the comments.

Mix dropped just 0.1%, to 11.4%, but it was enough to surrender the lead.

However, victory in breakfast was not enough for Nova to avoid an overall loss in its all people share, with the station dropping 0.8% to 11.2, leaving the way clear for Mix to win overall, rising 0.8% to 12.6%.

Nova106.9 has taken out the top spot in Brisbane for the first time in the GFK ratings survey, jumping 1.6 share points to win the market with a 13.7% share in total people.

Nova’s surge was driven in part by strong performances with breakfast trio Ash Bradnam, Kip Wightman and David Lutteral – ‘Ash, Kip & Luttsy’ – rising to 13.5% share (up 2.2) beating 97.3FM’s breakfast hosts Robin Bailey, Terry Hansen and Bob Gallagher who fell 2.6 points to an 11.4% share.

Kip & Luttsy’s show was the top across the board in breakfast toppling the ABC’s Spencer Howson who has been top in the breakfast slot for most of 2016.

Nova106.9 also had a strong result in the drive slot with Kate, Tim and Marty surging from third in the timeslot to first, up 2.4 points to a 16.5% share.
