Raj Gupta takes over as UM Australia’s chief strategy officer

MEC’s Asia-Pacific chief strategy officer, Raj Gupta, is to return to Australia to head strategy at UM Australia.

The position at UM had been vacant since Sam Geer moved to Initiative in August last year.

Gupta returns to Australia after moving to MEC’s Singapore office in 2008

Gupta had previously been head of strategy and head of MediaLab for MEC Australia between 2005 and 2008, having joined the agency in 2000 from Mitchell and Partners. In 2008 he moved to regional roles in Singapore.

While at MEC Asia-Pacific, he also led transformation projects for client digital and headed data acceleration initiatives with Citibank, Chanel and Colgate-Palmolive.

In his new role, Gupta will join UM’s senior leadership team and report to CEO Fiona Johnston.

Johnston said of Gupta’s appointment: “At this time of change at pace in our communications world, it is vital we offer clients as much counsel and perspective as we can on their businesses and media investments.”

Gupta added: “Too much of our professional world has become reactive, or even schizophrenic, and so we need to respond at pace but also protect solid brand and business ideas if they are to resonate beyond constant noise. Certainly UM is widely respected for its strategy-driven performance and I am looking forward to the new role.”
