Readers flee from The Guardian, Herald, Daily Mail, and news.com.au

ABC News is the most-read news website in Australia for the second month running, as four of its competitors shed over three million readers between them in 30 days.

Last month, ABC dethroned news.com.au as the country’s top news site, following a renewed focus on hard news and a shift away from lifestyle content.

The national broadcaster can boast 11.7 million readers for the month of October, according to the Ipsos iris ranking report, now more than 600,000 readers clear of news.com.au, who have 11.1 million readers, down by over 650,000 from September.

This was a slight drop compared to The Guardian, who lost 13% of its readership in 30 days – a whopping 974,000 readers.

The Sydney Morning Herald readership fell by 570,000, while the Daily Mail lost close to 800,000.

Interestingly, only the TV networks — Nine, Seven, and SBS — saw their readership lift during the month.

Despite dropping 1% in October, the ABC’s refocused online news offering seems to be working, after chairman Williams blasted a previous focus on lifestyle stories over the likes of Gaza strikes and NATO meetings.

“The ABC’s primary obligations are obviously to what might be regarded as serious news and commentary and to things that reflect a plurality of serious aspirations on the part of the community, or things that are in mainstream entertainment,” Williams told the Guardian.
