Red Jelly copywriter Robbie Arnott wins 2014 Scribe non-fiction literary prize

Red Jelly copywriterwriter Robbie Arnott has won the 2014 Scribe non-fiction prize for young writers.

The announcement:

Robbie Arnott, writer at Hobart creative agency Red Jelly, has won the 2014 Scribe Non-fiction Prize for Young Writers.

The national prize, now in its second year, is a developmental award for authors aged 30 or under writing long-form work in any non-fiction genre, including memoir, journalism, essay, biography, and creative nonfiction.

Arnott was announced as the winner at the Express Media Awards at the Wheeler Centre in Melbourne on Thursday 4 December.

Scribe senior editor Julia Carlomagno said Arnott’s ‘personal essay is visceral and evocative, and explores ideas around growing up in a society where a fascination with violence is essentially encouraged, particularly among boys. It’s a topical piece that engages with a wider debate about the role of weapons in contemporary Australian society.’

Red Jelly Director Peter Choraziak added: ‘Everyone at the agency is delighted for Robbie, he’s a terrific writer and creative mind so we should not be too surprised that he has been recognized nationally. This is another demonstration of how great creative work comes from everywhere in Australia and another indicator of the continued growth of Hobart as a centre for creative people of all types to develop their craft.’
