Reheated Jeremy Clarkson ratings Kryptonite for Nine
Nine’s Jeremy Clarkson-themed night saw TV viewers scurrying in every other direction, with big ratings for the return of Seven’s Packed To The Rafters and Ten’s Masterchef.
Seven won the night with a 32.3% free to air share, according to preliminary overnight metro figures from OzTam, and 1.9m for Packed To The Rafters. Ten took 23.1% and 1.8m for Masterchef.
By contrast, Nine’s Top Gear (a repeat from series 11), at 7.30pm rated a woeful 742,000, making it the number 21 show for the night – one of the worst performing primetime Nine shows in recent years. And the six year old episode of Who Do You Think You Are, focusing on the genealogy of Top Gear presenter Jeremy Clarkson, fared even worse in the 9pm slot. It rated 545,000, 29th for the night.
Meanwhile Australian Drug Lords, now rebadged as Under Surveillance, which was a late replacement for Australian Families of Crime which bombed in last week’s ratings pulled in 844,000 for Nine – a slight improvement on the show it replaced. Unusually, Nine finished with a below 20% share.
However, Seven’s other big debut last night – Minute To Win it did not start quite as strongly as Packed To The Rafters, attracting just under 1.3m, albeit against the tough opposition of Ten’s Masterchef.
Packed To The Rafters won the night in Sydney, Adelaide and Perth, while Masterchef won in Melbourne and Brisbane.

Ancient episodes = deeply unpopular. Who knew? Nine has being standing by the numbers for ages saying that repeats are what people want… well short term gain long term loss. Now you’re reaping what you sew. Long may it continue.

Based on the audience numbers for the first ep in Season 15 of Top Gear from the UK last Sunday, I think Channel 9 will be OK once they stop showing repeats.

Beaten only by a FIFA World Cup match isn’t too bad.

But there in lays the problem: “once they stop showing repeats”… It’s Nine, they Wont stop showing repeats, despite perpetual complaints from viewers (who own the airwaves). Nine will never be ‘The One’ again until they start believing their viewers are as smart as they actually are. We know a 5 yr old show when we see one. In most cases, we watched it the first time it was on (esp in Top Gears case). Wake up Nine, we’re already switching channels…

From what I can tell, most people who watch Top Gear in Australia were viewing the (pirated) latest episode last night! I expect the vuvuzela references will be lost to the winds by the time Nine gets around to showing it.

Channel 9 should stop showing repeats and show the new episodes!

Who Do You Think You Are was on at 10pm not 9pm.

And Mrs O why do you think Nine is showing repeats? Because they don’t have any new episodes left!

It amazes me that Nine can run Survivor, which has been hidden away on a changing 9-9.30 timeslot, the same day, or on minimal delay as the US networks. Yet offer a prime-time full of repeated Top Gear. If you want to milk your repeats Nine, stick em in GO where they belong – give your flagship channel a bit more to brag about.
