Return of Under The Dome and Hamish & Andy see audiences slump

Under the domeNine and Ten’s big series returns both failed to crack the million viewer benchmark on Tuesday night.

Ten’s second season of US sci-fi drama Under The Dome rated just 625,000 metro viewers despite heavy promotion, making it 18th for the night. And Nine’s Hamish & Andy’s Gap Year South America rated 983,000, seventh for the night.

Under The Dome was down 47% on last year’s 1.175m series debut while Hamish & Andy was down 37 per cent on the Gap Year Asia launch.

Seven’s House Rules topped the ratings with 1.5m viewers, according to preliminary overnight figures from OzTAM. Masterchef rated 991,000 for Ten, sixth for the night.

However, Hamish & Andy fared better in the key advertising age demographic of 25-54 where the show was second behind House Rules. Masterchef was third and Under The Dome tenth.

Tuesday night saw a split schedule for Nine with the EJ Whitten Legends Australian rules football game airing in Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth, where it pulled in a total of 575,000 viewers across the three capitals. In Melbourne the game was just behind Nine News as the most watched program of the night.

Seven’s drama Winners & Losers averaged 941,000 metro viewers.

Seven narrowly won the night across the five capitals, with a share of 22.4 per cent, just ahead of Nine’s 21.6 per cent. Ten rated 13.3 per cent and ABC1 11.2 per cent.
