Ridley Scott’s The Martian rakes in over $4m easily beating comedy The Intern

Matt Damon’s latest film The Martian dominated the weekend box office, taking in over $3m more than its closest rival Robert De Niro and Anne Hathaway’s The Intern.

The Ridley Scott sci-fi drama grabbed $4.516m across 558 screens over the weekend to take its total box office takings over $13m.

Meanwhile, The Intern pulled in $1.498m across 305 screens, taking its total local takings to $4.790m.

Johnny Depp and Benedict Cumberbatch’s Black Mass, which also stars Aussie Joel Edgerton, pulled in $1.129m across 269 screens in its opening weekend.

Coming in at fourth place was Roadshow’s Oddball which only saw $730,187 worth of tickets bought across 282 screens, bringing its local takings to $9.274m.

Warner Brothers’ Peter Pan movie, starring Hugh Jackman and Amanda Seyfried, grabbed $612,201 across 300 screens to take Pan’s total box office to $6.493m.
