Rip Curl takes Matrix-style approach in new campaign
Rip Curl has used Matrix-style filming techniques in a new campaign featuring surfing world champion Mick Fanning.
The ‘world first’ in surfing footage features uses 30 GoPro Hero 2 HD
cameras to produce the bullet-time effect seen in the Matrix.
The ad was devised inhouse, in collaboration with UK production company Timeslice, which worked on The Matrix.
The campaign is launching to promote the brand’s boardshorts and summer range.
A press release, explained:
The revolutionary campaign captures surfing in a way never seen before. The multi frame array of cameras gives us a Matrix style suite of ‘Mirage Moments’, which pull the viewer into the image, stalling there for long enough to enjoy a great move, before travelling down the line through the footage to the next Mirage Moment. The viewing metaphor for surfing in itself.
The campaign includes behind the scenes footage from the film.
It’s pretty much cheating using that song. It just sounds so god damn good.
Flume FTW!

Looks great. The surfing community would love this.
Awesome!
We love this..
Advertainment. Well done!
I surf, I work in the ad industry, and I will be buying a pair of Mirage boardies this weekend.
I applaud the Action Sport brands that continue to invest in high end, beautiful produced content. Such a refreshing change from the traditional ROI models (i.e. production $ vs media spend) that continue to stifle the industry.
More please.
