Rogue One: A Star Wars Story ninth biggest box office opening weekend in history
The latest Star Wars film has made weekend box office history, bumping Universal’s 2015 film Fast and Furious 7 into 10th place in the list of largest weekend openings to date.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, created by Lucasfilm pulled in $14.757m on its first weekend in theatres.
The Star Wars spin off is the eighth in the franchise, and tells the story of how the rebel alliance stole the plans for the Death Star.
While the film was well ahead of other movies over the weekend, Trolls maintained its position in second place for the third week, making $1.826m at box office.
Trolls has made a total of $10.518m since its opening on December 1.
In third place for its second week, Office Christmas Party collected $1.140m in earnings.
The comedy features Jennifer Aniston who plays a corporate CEO as she tries to shutdown the Chicago branch of the business run by her young brother.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them slipped to fourth place at weekend box office after four weeks in the top spot.
The film made $1.085m over the weekend bringing its total revenue to $28.852m.
Hacksaw Ridge stole fifth place this week grabbing $289,083 over the weekend.
Directed by Mel Gibson, the WW2 epic tells the story of Desmond T. Doss a man who saved 75 men in Okinawa.
