Ross Dougall is Ikon Melbourne’s first strategy director

The Melbourne office of STW Group media agency Ikon Communications has appointed its first director of strategy.

Ross Dougall joins from Mitchell & Partners, where he was a media strategist.

Dougall, who has also worked in strategy roles at ZenithOptimedia and Ogilvy’s digital media offering Neo@Ogilvy, is one of the first hires made by Trudi Sampola, who is three months into her role as Ikon Melbourne’s MD.

“Ross’s brief is to work with our clients, agency partners and the Ikon team and be the glue that brings brand, consumer and comms together,” Sampola told Mumbrella.

“He is also going to be the conduit between our strategy teams nationally, and ensure we are collaborating and sharing best practices.”

Former Naked and OMD executive Sampola joined Ikon from employee engagement consultancy Fivefootfour, a firm she founded late last year.

Sampola replaced Ikon Melbourne’s managing partner Ben Willee, who left in September to set up the media department of Melbourne creative agency Spinach.

Two year-old Ikon Melbourne now has 19 staff. Its biggest client is Myer, but it also handles SPC, Crazy John’s and Rio Tinto.

Ikon was named media agency of the year by Mumbrella in December.
