The announcement:
SKY NEWS AUSTRALIA ANNOUNCES THOUGHT-PROVOKING TELEVISION SPECIAL – THE DEATH OF THE AUSSIE LARRIKIN?
PREMIERING TUESDAY 16 JUNE AT 8:00PM
Sky News Australia today announced it will bring audiences a new thought-provoking television special, The Death of the Aussie Larrikin? premiering Tuesday 16 June at 8:00pm.
Providing audiences with a first look at the special today, the program explores whether or not political correctness has caused the demise of the larrikin spirit in Australian life and culture.
The one-hour television event takes a nostalgic look back at the ‘Aussie larrikin’ of the 70s and 80s, then tracks the changing tastes and standards of more recent years.
Providing humour as well as insights and commentary, The Death of the Aussie Larrikin? begins by taking a look at the brash, loud, larrikin culture epitomised by figures such as Paul Hogan. It explores if the humour and spirit of Hogan’s heyday has been crushed by political correctness, the growth of social media, and the “cancel culture” which in recent years has seen online outrage shut down comedy and TV shows.
As well as exploring whether the politics of language and culture has caused the disappearance of the larrikins of the 70s and 80s, it asks if there was a dark, divisive side to the larrikin ethos.
The program is hosted by Sky News Outsiders anchor and political commentator Rowan Dean and features interviews with high-profile Australians including legendary television presenter and co-host of Studio 10 on Network Ten Kerri-Anne Kennerley, comedians Paul Fenech, Vince Sorrenti and Emma Malik, entertainer and actress Delvene Delaney as well as ABC Radio presenter James Valentine.
Watch The Death of the Aussie Larrikin? with Rowan Dean 8:00pm AEST Tuesday 16 June on Sky News, Foxtel channel 103 & 600 Sky News on WIN, channel 53 and 83
Also available on Kayo or listen to the audio stream on iHeartRadio

How embarrassing. Take one look at the Betoota Advocate, Brown Cardigan or Australian content on Tik Tok to know that larrikinism is alive and well for Millenials and Gen X. Most Australians have just moved past sub-rate comedy which uses sexism and racism to appear edgy.

I’m old enough to remember the prime of “Aussie larrikin” culture when it was completely acceptable to bash and vilify gay people, women and ethnic minorities in prime time. All for a good Aussie “laugh” of course. That wasn’t so long ago. Look back at popular shows from the 90s like Fast Forward, Hey Hey, the various footy shows etc and you’ll be completely shocked.
These privileged white hetero men who always held power loved to “punch downwards”. Now they’re stopped from doing so they are freaking out and feeling oppressed. What a joke.
