One of the DJs at the centre of the royal hoax call Mel Greig is returning to radio three years on from the incident.

Grieg has been signed to Wollongong radio station Wave FM as its breakfast host alongside Travis Winks with Wave FM’s station manager Tony Williams syaing: “We are delighted to announce that Mel Greig will be joining the Wave FM Breakfast Show with Travis Winks in 2016.

“Over the past few weeks we have spent time with Mel and have really had a chance to learn more about her and how much she has to offer. Her warmth, enthusiasm and experience are going to be great attributes to the Wave family.”

Greg has previously said it was “hard not to get bitter” at seeing other individuals involved in the prank remain in radio and in some cases handed promotions following the controversy which followed after Greig and fellow 2DayFM presenter Michael Christian impersonated the Queen and Prince Charles and phoned the hospital where the Duchess of Cambridge was being treated for morning sickness.

The nurse who put the call through to the ward, Jacintha Saldanha, later committed suicide.

Speaking at this year’s Mumbrella 360, Greig explained how she “fought for her life” after sinking into depression following Saldanha’s death just a few days after the call, which made headlines around the world. Her fellow host Michael Christian remained at Southern Cross Austereo and was promoted to the anchor role on the ‘Dan and Maz’ breakfast program.

However at the same time she announced she had taken a job in Adelaide with content marketing agency Kingdom Advertising, her first paid work since the incident.

Williams cited Greig’s charity work as part of the reason for appointing her.

“We love Mel’s genuine excitement and passion for radio and the anticipation for the move to Illawarra,” he said. “Mel is already heavily involved in her community surroundings and is an avid charity ambassador, we can’t wait to see her get involved in the Illawarra community too.

“Mel will make the move to Wollongong in early January and she is very excited about the move.”

Greig also said he was pleased to return to a profession she loved.

“I’m thrilled to be joining the team at Wave FM and I’m so grateful to be given the opportunity to return to what I love,” said Greig. “To have the ability to use your voice to inspire others or to help people by sharing your own experiences is a rewarding and incredible job to have.

“I can’t wait to start on air and to start exploring the South Coast and discovering everything it has to offer. I’m pretty sure this big goofy smile that I currently have on my face will be firmly planted for months to come.”
