Rugby World Cup Final pulls more than 500,000 on Nine and Gem despite early morning kick off

OzTam overnight rankings show 501,000 people braved the 3am AESDT start to watch the match on Gem and Nine. Those numbers do not take into account people watching in pubs, and do not include the Fox Sports broadcast which saw 292,000 people tune in on Fox Sports 2.

It represents a surge in interest for the code, after the semi-final between Australia and Argentina managed just 160,000 viewers on Gem the week previously.

Nine claimed a comfortable victory for the day with a network share of 33.6 per cent for audience, with the primary channel claiming 24.6 per cent.

It was buoyed by The Block which won the night with 1.209m viewers, while 60 Minutes, which featured interviews with Australians in Syria fighting ISIS, managed 948,000 at 8.30pm.

Meanwhile Seven’s current affairs show Sunday Night, which was on at 7pm, drew 972,000 viewers with Beach Cops at 8pm drawing 716,000.

Over on Ten, The Biggest Loser Families drew 576,000 viewers to be the TV Network’s most watched show of the night.

In the news race, Nine news won the night with 1.135m compared with 1.11m for Seven.

While Nine’s main channel won the night, Seven had a 19.2 per cent share, Ten had a 10.7 per cent share and the ABC 9.6 per cent.
