Ryan Shelton to depart Nova as drivetime upheaval continues

The shakeup in Australia’s national drivetime radio shows is continuing with Ryan Shelton announcing tonight that he is quitting DMG’s Nova.

His move comes as Austereo continues the hunt for a replacement for its Hamish & Andy drivetime slot on the Today network.

Shelton announced his plans to depart the Ryan, Monty & Wippa Show at the end of tonight’s show. He will stay until the end of the year. He said: “This will be my last year working for Drive on Nova. I signed up for one year and ended up staying for two.”

Hamish Blake and Andy Lee announced their departure back in August, meaning changes for Australia’s biggest two FM drivetime shows from the start of next year.

Hamish & Andy is the Australia’s biggest rating drivetime show. In Sydney the 4-7pm slot has a 14.6% share for 2Day FM. Nova 969’s is second with 9.2%

In Melbourne, Today Network’s Fox FM has a 19.2% share of 4-7pm, while Nova 100 is 7.2%.

Shelton said that he wanted to go back to working with production company Radio Karate, which Hamish Blake and Andy Lee are also partners in.

He said: “The radio experience has been a truly amazing one and I have learnt so much, but it has come at the expense of working with my TV partners at Radio Karate. Monty and Wippa are and always will be two of my closest friends and I’ll definitely miss seeing them at work every day but I’m excited about the chance to throw myself back into TV full time and re-engaging fully with all those opportunities.”

Sam Thompson, Nova 100 General Manager said, “Ryan is extremely talented and versatile. I can’t wait to see him back on TV.”
