S4 Capital joins Amazon, Coca-Cola and Unilever to sign Climate Pledge

Sir Martin Sorrell’s S4 Capital has become the first company in the marketing and advertising industry to sign The Climate Pledge.

S4 Capital joins 19 other new signatories to the pledge, including Acciona, Hotelbeds and IBM. Other signatories to date include Coca-Cola, Mercedes-Benz, Unilever, Verizon and many more.

In addition, S4 Capital has revealed that MediaMonks built the digital platform for the pledge, TheClimatePledge.com.

S4 Capital executive chairman Sorrell is issuing the industry a challenge to follow suit.  To “catalyse sustainable production and business practices” by signing the Climate Pledge and “understanding the role that agencies and holding companies must play in helping brands achieve more efficient and sustainable work streams”.

These new signatories coincide with the US president Joe Biden administration’s own ambition to bring the United States back into the Paris Agreement, casting a spotlight on the responsibility we each have to slow climate change and build a better environment.

Signatories to The Climate Pledge agree to:

  • Measure and report greenhouse gas emissions on a regular basis.
  • Implement decarbonisation strategies in line with the Paris Agreement through real business changes and innovations, including efficiency improvements, renewable energy, materials reductions, and other carbon emission elimination strategies.
  • Neutralise any remaining emissions with additional, quantifiable, real, permanent, and socially-beneficial offsets to achieve net-zero annual carbon emissions by 2040 — a decade ahead of the Paris Agreement’s goal of 2050.

Each company is implementing science-based, high-impact changes to its business to help decarbonise the value chain, including innovating in a circular economy, deploying clean energy solutions, and mobilising supply chains to reach net-zero by 2040.

Amazon and Global Optimism co-founded The Climate Pledge in 2019, as a commitment to reach the Paris Agreement 10 years early and be net-zero carbon by 2040. There are now 53 organisations which have signed The Climate Pledge.
