“homos”- Yumi did give a shout-out to Melbourne gay radio station Joy FM when she and her Circle co-hosts accepted their Logie in 2011, has hosted charity auctions at The Laird (a famous gay bar that relaxed their no-women rule to allow her and Chrissie Swann in) to raise money for the David Williams Foundation that provides care to people with HIV. She is quite active in the gay community , despite being married with children, and appreciated by it and I’m sure she meant it as a term of endearment.
It is possible to be too precious about these things.

Well where I come from Homo Sapien – homo is derogatory. Gay is preferred.

I am sure Yumi meant it in good faith and not in a nasty way. I thought I would point it out though.
If Kyle Sandilands had made the same comment would it be okay?
I often think that females can get away with slips v males (gender in the media and all that). Thoughts?

Hi pc,
Re women getting an easier ride, there are so few women on commercial radio that it’s probably impossible to make a comparison.
That said, look at the racist, sexist hate campaign the tabloids confected and sustained for weeks towards Yumi, taking her comments re Roberts Smith out of context.
I would argue much of Australia finds it easier to hate a woman who expresses an opinion (and so few even get the opportunity) than a man. And plenty of men have made their careers consciously inciting hate, fear and shock (sandilands had a segment where a listener ate his own feces). Yumi and Sami are deliberately not in that boat.

Hi pink mafia, I suppose it depends how it’s used and meant.
