Samson & Delilah, shortlisted for the Oscars

Samson & Delilah, Warwick ThorntonWarwick Thornton’s acclaimed film Samson & Delilah is among the final nine contenders for the Best Foreign Film trophy at next month’s Academy Awards.

Samson & Delilah and the other ‘semi-finalists’ were selected from an initial pool of 65 eligible films. The final five will be announced with the rest of the nominations, at 12:30am on February 3 (AET).

The film, which has not yet found an American distributor and was ignored by the Hollywood Foreign Press for this week’s Golden Globes, is spoken in the Warlpiri language, which made it eligible for a category that only accepts films in languages other than English.

The other finalists are:

Kazakhstan, Kelin, Ermek Tursunov, director
The Netherlands, Winter in Wartime, Martin Koolhoven, director
Peru, The Milk of Sorrow, Claudia Llosa, director
