The announcement:

SBS Radio today announces a new partnership with the Australian Film Television & Radio School (AFTRS), focused on developing bilingual Australian radio talent through a Graduate Diploma in Radio 2017 scholarship.

An Australian first, the initiative aims to expand and enrich AFTRS’ student community by recognising an outstanding radio student, selected on the basis of merit from eligible students across several language groups.

In addition to being awarded a scholarship to the AFTRS’ Graduate Diploma in Radio, the successful applicant will also be offered a one day per week 12-month placement with SBS Radio.

Director of SBS Radio, Mandi Wicks, said: “Multilingual talent is at the heart of SBS Radio and we are thrilled to be working with AFTRS to encourage and champion further representation.

“We are proud to be leading the way with this Australian-first initiative, a unique opportunity for any budding radio talent, and we look forward to welcoming the successful applicant to the team in 2017.”

AFTRS Program Leader, Radio, Lisa Sweeney, said: “AFTRS greatly values the opportunity to collaborate in this way with SBS Radio for this scholarship. AFTRS and SBS are both committed to encouraging the development of diverse Australian stories and this monetary support for a talented student will assist both organisations to achieve this much-needed diversity.”

The following language groups are qualified to apply for the scholarship: Arabic, Mandarin, Cantonese, Kurdish, Hindi, Korean, Indonesian, Vietnamese, Italian, Greek and Nepali and shortlisted students will be required to undertake a language test facilitated by SBS Radio.

Applications for the AFTRS Graduate Diploma of Radio are open for a second round from December 1, 2016 to January 15, 2017. Students offered a place through this scholarship will be required to study full time at the AFTRS Sydney campus, with a commencement date of Monday, February 20, 2017.
