SCA partners with the BBC, with content to be available on LiSTNR

Southern Cross Austereo (SCA) has announced its first content partnership with the BBC, which will see some of the broadcasters most famous programs available for access on LiSTNR.

Music shows such as the Essential Mix and Desert Island Discs, programs from broadcaster and historian David Attenborough, economist Tim Harford, as well as a back catalogue of live concerts from the In Concert collection will all be made available on LiSTNR from 23 June.

CEO of SCA, Grant Blackley said: “When we launched LiSTNR in February this year, we promised that it was only the beginning. We couldn’t be more delighted that our first LiSTNR partnership is with international broadcaster the BBC which will bring our audiences world class, compelling, premium content from its vast library.

“We have selected BBC content that will resonate with our listeners and attract new audiences to LiSTNR. This is the first of a series of partnerships that will see LiSTNR become the audio destination of choice for premium and popular content such as what we are offering from the BBC,” Blackley continued.

BBC senior business development manager North America, Caribbean and BBC Radio International at BBC World Service, Larissa Abid, added: “BBC works with some of the biggest names in music, entertainment and journalism to create world class audio content. Our partnership with SCA will see BBC content available for the first time on LiSTNR. We are impressed with the LiSTNR personalised app offering and are confident that the BBC content slate will appeal to a broad audience.”

SCA general manager digital audio, Grant Tothill, said: “LiSTNR offers Australian audio streamers a diverse range of premium curated and created content. To have the BBC as one of our partners is a reinforcement of that and a great way to complement our locally created live and on demand content across radio, podcasts, music and news.”

Following the launch of LiSTNR in February, Blackley told Mumbrella the app would provide not only provide benefits to consumers, but also opportunities to advertisers.

“LiSTNR underpins the implementation of our new digital first operating model at SCA. With a mandatory sign in, SCA will have access to known users and a real time deep understanding of our audiences to deliver targeted audiences at scale for advertisers.”

The LiSTNR service houses all SCA digital assets, including live radio, podcasts, music and news. The service was launched to streamline and personalise access to the live streams of all content across the Hit and Triple M networks, in addition to over 100 local, national and global podcasts SCA houses.

Podcast listening has been steadily trending upwards, with this month’s Triton Podcast Metrics report showing a record high of 52.2 million downloads in May. The LiSTNR launch was part of a transition to a digital-first operating model for SCA, taking opportunity which presented itself through the pandemic last year to reshape the business.
