Schwartz Media CEO Rebecca Costello joins Guardian Australia as new MD

Guardian Australia has appointed Schwartz Media’s chief executive Rebecca Costello as its new managing director, replacing Dan Stinton, who left the business in August.

Directly reporting to Guardian Media Group’s chief executive Anna Bateson, Costello will work alongside Guardian Australia editor Lenore Taylor to drive the publishing group’s local growth.

Costello has been overseeing Schwartz Media for the past 17 years, including its mastheads The Monthly and The Saturday Paper, and news podcast 7am.

Costello is set to join Guardian Australia in January 2024, and said it’s exciting to be joining the group in a crucial period of growth.

“Guardian Australia’s distinct reader revenue model and steadfast editorial mission set it apart from other media organisations in this country.

“With its talented team and independent ownership, the organisation is poised to exert an even greater impact in Australia, particularly in this era where fearless and impactful investigative journalism holds unprecedented importance.”

Guardian Media Group chief executive Anna Bateson said: “I am delighted Rebecca is joining us. Her track record of entrepreneurial commercial leadership is impressive.

“In partnership with our editor Lenore Taylor, I believe she has all the right qualities to help us build on Guardian Australia’s many commercial successes as we look to the future.”

Stinton, the previous managing director, resigned in May this year to join tech company Healthengine as its new CEO.
