Screen Australia and ABC encourages emerging Doco makers

Launched Today, Opening Shot is a new initiative by Screen Australia and ABC TV Documentaries to help emerging documentarians find funding and screens on ABC2.

Creating a prime time series, the $400,000 initiative will commission up to six one-off films looking at contemporary Australian life by filmmakers considered emerging talent, age 35 and under (at 1 July, 2011).

Broken into half-hour allotments, applicants can apply for $80,000 per documentary.

In a press release, Alan Erson, ABC’s Head of Documentary said, “ABC2 offers a great opportunity to curate a cohesive body of work while also allowing documentary makers set the creative agenda.”

Screen Australia’s Documentary Manager, Liz Stevens said, “We are thrilled to be continuing our partnership with the ABC in giving opportunities to young Australian talent to tell contemporary stories in their own voices.”
