Sean Walsh quits dmg media for non-media exec role

dmg media global chief brand officer Sean Walsh is leaving the company for an executive position at Bilt Rewards, a US-based rewards platform for renters.

Walsh has been at dmg media, whose mastheads include DailyMail.com, Daily Mail Australia, MailOnline and Mail Newspapers, since 2014.

In 2022, he became global chief brand officer and managing director for its US operations.

Walsh told Mumbrella he’s extremely grateful for the opportunities he’s had during his time at dmg media, and wished them all the best for the future.

“But, I look forward to starting this new challenge,” he said.

In an email sent to staff, dmg media’s CEO Rich Caccappolo said Walsh played a pivotal role across the company.

“He has succeeded in several areas, the most noteworthy being the exponential growth of our brand’s awareness across the United States, but due to the hard work of Sean and his team, DailyMail.com and the brands of dmg media are highly sourced not only across the US, but the United Kingdom and Australia too,” he wrote.

“I’d personally like to thank Sean for his significant contribution to dmg media and wish him well in the next phase of his career.”

Walsh added: “These past ten years have been an extraordinary and life changing journey that I will be forever grateful for.

“I’m very proud to have represented the brands of dmg media across the globe and I leave with sincere gratitude and respect for my colleagues, our dedicated readers and our commercial and external partners,” he concluded.

In his new role of managing director, external relations, Walsh will be responsible for Bilt Rewards’ communications strategy to key external stakeholder groups including media, government, regulatory and industry bodies. He will remain based in New York.

Founder and CEO of Bilt Rewards, Ankur Jain, said: “Sean is one of those rare executives who can drive growth at scale but also understands the startup hustle – having helped transform a powerful 125 year old newspaper brand from the UK into a global social media and digital news powerhouse.

“We’re beyond excited to have him join the Bilt team at this pivotal moment in our mission to rethink what it means to rent in the United States.”

Walsh said the unique opportunity was something he could not refuse: “As both a Bilt Rewards member and loyal fan, I cannot wait to amplify the brand’s reach to the approximately 109 million renters across the United States.”

Walsh’s last day at dmg media will be Monday 11 September. In Australia and the UK, Hayley Barlow will handle communications in the interim, while Nicole Hall will manage the US.
