The Secret Life of Pets grabs top spot at the box office on first weekend of school holidays

The first weekend of the school holidays has helped boost animation The Secret Life of Pets back to the box office top spot after taking in $3.416m across 489 screens.

The animated film, which has a total local box office of $17.890m, pushed the third Bridget Jones film – Bridget Jones’ Baby – into third place after it took $2.817m in tickets to take its box office total to $10.345m.

Tom Hanks’ Sully, which tells the story Capt. Chesley ‘Sully’ Sullenberger’s emergency landing in New York’s Hudson River, claimed third place with $1.666m worth of tickets sold across 310 screens.

Kids movies Storks and Pete’s Dragon rounded out the top five after raking in $1.328m across 256 screens and $$1.047m across 369 screens, respectively.

The Beatles Live: Eight Days a Week – The Touring Years rounded out the top 10 films, pulling in $343,800 across 119 screens.
