Seven to air Hopman Cup on 7mate

7mateThe Seven Network has announced it will broadcast the Hyundai Hopman Cup on digital channel 7Mate in the wake of Network Ten’s decision to drop the event after failing to agree with organisers over scheduling.

While Hopman organisers appeared not welcome a push by the Ten Network to move the Hopman Cup to one of Ten’s secondary digital channels Eleven and One, the event will now be broadcast on Seven’s digital channel 7mate, with the option of marquee matches to be televised live on Seven.

Seven’s head of sport Saul Shtein said in a statement: “We are delighted to be expanding our commitment to tennis across the summer and importantly delivering live coverage of the Hyundai Hopman Cup on our broadcast television platform.”

Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Australian’s Bernard Tomic and Sam Stousr will headline the official mixed team competition which takes place from December 28 2013 to January 4 2014.

Tournament director Paul Kilderry said in a statement: “We’re excited to see the Hyundai Hopman Cup build a relationship with Seven, a long term partner of Australian tennis. Now fans will have the opportunity to watch all the action live and free in Perth and around Australia as we continue to grow the event’s audience domestically. The strength of the 2014 field will complement Seven’s lead- in coverage to the Australian Open.”
