Seven Australian films to screen at Pusan International Film Festival

Ben C. Lucas’ Wasted on the Young is one of seven Australian films selected to screen at the Pusan International Film Festival in Korea next month. Young will be screened in the world cinema category along with Jim Loach’s Oranges and Sunshine, and Ivan Sen’s Dreamland.

Belinda Chayko’s Lou will screen in the flash forward section and The Kiss directed by Ashley Page, will be shown in the wide angle – short film showcase category.

Patrick Hughes’ Red Hill and Andrew Traucki’s The Reef have been selected to show in the midnight passion program – a diverse genre category, that recognises entertainment value.

Screen Australia’s Head of Production Investment Ross Matthews said: “It’s great to see such an exciting line-up of Australian films screening at Pusan, which has established itself as one of Asia’s most dynamic film events.”

  • Wasted on the Young tells the story of  a high school party gone wrong. It premiered at the Sydney International Film Festival, and made its debut at the Toronto International Film Festival on Friday.   It will be released by paramount pictures in 2011.

  • Oranges and Sunshine is the story of social worker Margaret Humphreys who uncovered a social scandal  – the deportation of children from the UK.  It will premiere at PIFF and be released by Icon Film Distribution.

  • Dreamland follows Dan Hunter as he obsessively searches for UFO’s in Nevada Desert’s Area 51. Alone – he stumbles upon a bigger mystery.  Distributed by Pack Screen in association with Bunya Productions.

  • Lou tells of the tender relationship between 11 year old Lou and her grandfather. It will be distributed Kojo Pictures.

  • Red Hill is set in the town of Red Hill and follows a young police officer as his first day on the job goes from bad to worse.  Distributed by Sony Pictures Releasing.

  • The Reef is based on true events and tells the story of four friends whose boat capsizes on the Great Barrier Reef – and are subsequently stalked by a great white shark as they struggle to return to land. Distribution by Polyphony Entertainment/All Interactive Entertainment.

  • The Kiss is a short film about two teenage girls who seek respite from the heat in an old fire-water tank and become trapped.  It will premiere at PIFF.
