Seven denies reports of Big Brother axing

Seven has denied reports that Big Brother has been axed, telling Mumbrella the show’s future is still under discussion.

Big Brother returned this November to a less-than-stellar reception, with its Monday night premiere drawing just 274,000 viewers across the five metro areas, just scraping into that evening’s top 20 shows.

Seven immediately removed it from the plum 7:30pm time slot, and the show struggled along for a month, with the finale pulling a five-metro audience of just 152,000.

A number of outlets reported today the show has been axed – not so, a Seven spokesperson told Mumbrella this afternoon: “It hasn’t been axed: we are still considering its future.”

TV Blackbox has since reported that the show won’t return this year, but may be back in 2025. We’ve asked Seven for further clarification.

Much of the discord from longtime fans has been the shift away from the previous live format to a pre-recorded show.

Interestingly, Big Brother also returned to screens in the UK last October, with the original live format, and was a ratings winner – drawing the biggest audiences for the show since 2010.

The answer is clear for Seven – it’s time for the return of Hot Dogs.
